Is the GST registration threshold the same in every state?

Reviewed June 2026

No — and assuming one all-India number is a common miss. The registration threshold depends on two things at once: what you supply (goods enjoy a higher limit than services) and where you operate (a set of special-category states, several of them in the North-East, work on lower limits).

On top of the state-wise grid sit the compulsory-registration triggers, which don't look at turnover at all — supplying goods inter-state, selling through certain e-commerce channels, or falling under reverse-charge situations can each bring registration forward regardless of size.

So the real question is never “what is the threshold?” but “what is MY threshold, given my state and my supply mix?” That's a five-minute check against your facts — and far cheaper as a planning conversation than as a discovery later. We run it for every new business that asks.
